Obsessive Compulsive Disorder
Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is a pattern of intrusive and uncomfortable thoughts (obsessions), combined with behaviors or compulsions (either overt behaviors or unseen cognitive repetitions) that a child or teenager may engage in to neutralize the obsession and get rid of the associated thoughts.
The result can be a highly repetitive cycle of thoughts and behaviors that feels unstoppable. A common OCD obsession is the worry that something bad will happen to themselves or a loved one. As a result, they engage in avoidance or repeat an action to ease the fear.
At Westside Child Psychology, our dedicated team of experienced child psychologists in Calgary specializes in OCD treatment, helping individuals find relief and regain control. We are trained in the cycle of OCD, and the various treatment approaches, including Exposure plus Response Prevention (ERP). Once children and teenagers learn how to get the upper hand on their OCD symptomology and see how effective ERP can be, the treatment and relief provided by our OCD therapists can be obtained quickly.
