Autism Spectrum Disorders
Autism spectrum disorders (ASD) are social communication disorders that result in socialization and communication deficits (both verbal and non-verbal).
The range of severity is wide, encompassing very mild characteristics, to significantly impairing symptomology. The diagnostic terms used to identify ASD have changed over the years, where in our current diagnostic manual, The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders Fifth Text Revision (DSM-5-TR), both ASD and Social (Pragmatic) Communication Disorder are identified social communication disorders that are differentiated based on the presence of restricted, repetitive patterns of behavior, interests, or activities. In both disorders, challenges with perspective taking, self-awareness, and reading in between the lines of social language and behaviors are key areas that can be targeted and improved upon with treatment and social skill intervention. Children and teens with ASD can learn the social rules and rubrics required to experience more success with their peers.
